Are you ready?
Of course you are.
But just in case you’re having that last-minute panic that you’re not prepared for the return of routine, dance lessons, and registers, we’ve put together this dance teacher back-to-school checklist.

1) Classes
Classes, arguably the most important part of your role as a dance teacher, are to know your class schedule and what those classes entail… So let’s dive into the class checklist for you:

Students
Know who is going to be in your class, making note of any new or returning students. For new students, do they have any additional needs or special requirements you need to be aware of? Or, for returning students, is there anything you need to keep in mind with them as well? For example, do they still have a friendship group in the lesson, or have their friends not returned, moved up a class, etc.?
It’s always good to have a grip on your students, as knowing this, as well as the total number of students in your class, is good to be aware of as you head into the new term.

Registers
How do you do your registers? Are these completed on a class management system (like Class Manager)? Or do you need to print some physical copies of your registers?
Ensure you have the latest and most up-to-date version of the register needed for your classes, along with a pen to mark them off.
Or, if online via dance studio software, ensure they are current and that you have access to them. The last thing you want on your first day back is forgetting your registers or faffing around trying to find them…

2) Lesson Plans
Now, we know that all dance studios and all teachers are different, and there is no one way to plan your lessons. But ahead of the start of the new year, you may want to have at least a few weeks of lessons planned, or a clear goal outlined.
Goals could be anything your lessons are working towards—whether that’s a Christmas showcase, an upcoming competition, or preparing for exams.
Knowing what you’re working towards, or your overall curriculum, will help you plan lessons and give them structure. And it is certainly something that you’ll want a clear understanding of ahead of starting the year.

3) Safeguarding
You’ll want to make sure you’re taking all the safeguarding precautions you need ahead of the school year:
DBS (or equivalent): Ensure your DBS (or equivalent) is fully up to date and ready for the coming year. You can learn more about DBS and other required forms in our blog post: “Dance Studio Certifications: What You Need to Stay Compliant.”
Emergency contact details: Make sure you have all the necessary emergency contacts for your students.
First aid and insurance: Check that your first aid training (if required) and insurance policies are valid and up to date.

4) Are You Packed and Ready?
Last but not least, are you prepped and ready for the upcoming start of term?
Have you:
Got your uniform—washed and ready, not still bundled in a pile?
Packed your bag, including printed registers, lesson plans, and anything you might need for class (e.g. yoga blocks for stretches)?
Checked your first aid kit—is everything there and in date?
Packed spare tops, just in case?
Added anything else you could possibly need?

To Sum It Up:
Going back to dance is an exciting time, and we know you can’t wait to get back in the studio and teaching. But we also know that after the long summer break, it can also feel a little anxiety-inducing.
So, to sum it up, here’s a brief breakdown of everything we’ve discussed:
