Step Into Christmas: Christmas Dance Lesson Ideas

5 min read

Finding the best time to change your dance studio software can feel tricky. There are usually a ton of reasons you might be thinking about making the switch, and that’s completely normal.

Christmas Obstacle Course

This festive obstacle course is always a hit, and the best part? You can make it as simple or as elaborate as you like.

Use cones, chairs, boxes, tinsel, lights, or anything else you already have around the studio to create a magical (and slightly chaotic) winter pathway.

The idea:

Split your dancers into pairs or teams. First, choose one dancer to be Santa and the others to be reindeer. Blindfold the reindeer, and place the team at one end of the studio. Santa’s job is to guide the team safely to the other side—using clear instructions, teamwork, and lots of laughter.

Ways to make it harder:

  • Have two teams race each other. First team to reach the other end (and back!) wins.

  • Place baubles or small props along the route. Teams must collect all items as they move.

Put a box of baubles at one end of the hall and an empty box at the other. Teams transport baubles one by one, and whoever fills their box first wins.

12 Days of Christmas

The long summer break is ideal for software changes. With fewer classes and more downtime, you can:

  • Take a detailed look at your business

  • Identify areas for improvement

  • Make changes without the stress of your normal day-to-day schedule

“Santa’s Workshop” Jazz Combo

Turn your class into an energetic, bustling workshop full of Christmas character and cheeky movement.

Music:

Upbeat holiday favourites like “Santa Claus Is Coming to Town,” “Jingle Bell Rock,” or a jazzy Christmas remix.

How to build it:

Start with a character warm-up where students walk, skip, and pose as elves, toy soldiers, reindeer, or even Santa himself. Bring out sharp jazz lines, animated faces, and exaggerated gestures—imagine elves rushing to finish toys before Christmas Eve!

Then teach a short, high-energy jazz combination full of classic kicks, stylised footwork, jumps, turns, and playful accents. Encourage big storytelling: elves polishing toys, wrapping presents, or loading the sleigh.

Focus:

  • Sharp jazz technique

  • Character work and expression

  • Fast, precise footwork

  • Performance quality

Bonus twist:

Let each dancer choose a workshop character—elf, reindeer, toy soldier, doll, gingerbread person—and incorporate their personality into the choreography. You can even divide the routine into “workshop sections” where different characters take turns in the spotlight.

This combo works beautifully for both kids and teens and is perfect for social media reels or a mini end-of-term performance.
