Strategic Planning for 2026: For Your Dance Studio

6 min read

December for dance studio owners usually means recitals, rehearsals, costumes, and chaos. Once the curtain closes, all you want is a moment to relax—and maybe a box of Christmas chocolates. But it’s also the perfect time to look ahead and plan for 2026.

Strategic planning doesn’t have to be scary. Reflect on what went well this year, identify improvements, and set clear goals. Here’s a simple framework to make 2026 your studio’s best year yet, plus a handy checklist to track progress.

Psst, we've got a longer, more in-depth version of this blog post, available as a downloadable guide here.

1: Review & Reflect

Performance Review: Look back at 2025:

  • Enrollments: Which classes and age groups were most popular?

  • Retention: How many students stayed enrolled?

  • Revenue: Which classes and groups generated the most?

  • Feedback: What themes emerged from parents and students?

  • Competition: What are local studios doing differently?

SWOT Analysis: Identify your studio’s Strengths, Weaknesses, Opportunities, and Threats to guide decisions next year.

(We cover this in more detail in our blog post Student Retention: How to Keep Your Dance Students at Your Studio.)

2: Set Strategic Goals (Not Just Revenue Targets)

When we think about goal-setting, it’s easy to jump straight to big revenue numbers. But strategy planning doesn’t always start with “I want to make £X more next year.”

In a recent webinar with Alison Foster-Jones, she shared a refreshing perspective: your financial goals should connect to your life, not just your bottom line. (See the webinar in full here.)

For example:

  • “I want to earn enough each month to afford a weekly massage.”

  • “I want to earn enough each month to send my daughter to a football academy.”

Once you know what you want to afford, turn it into a number.

One of the best and easiest ways to stick to a goal and ensure it is achievable is to create a SMART goal. Smart goal setting for your dance studio is a great way to encourage your personal and professional growth.

One important thing to remember when setting your goals is not to lose sight of who you are and what your studio stands for. When a dance studio becomes too focused on increasing revenue, it can lose the integrity, quality, and values that encouraged parents to enrol their children in the first place.

Our top piece of advice as you plan your 2026 dance studio strategy is simple: stay true to your values and let them guide every decision you make.

3: Financial Planning

Rising costs mean it’s time to review your finances:

  1. List expenses: Fixed (rent, utilities, insurance) and variable (costumes, guest teachers).

  2. Compare costs to revenue: Identify gaps between current revenue and your goals.

  3. Plan revenue adjustments: Consider tuition increases, tiered pricing, packages, or incentives.

4: Enrollment & Retention

The most effective way to reach your studio goals is twofold: retain your existing students and encourage new enrollments. It costs more to attract new families than to keep the ones you already have. Focusing on these areas is the healthiest and easiest way to grow both revenue and your studio community.

Retention:

Retention starts with making your current students feel valued and prioritised. Some strategies include:

  • Early access for returning families – open enrollment for 2026 classes to existing students before the general public.

  • Returning-student incentives – offer discounts or waived fees to encourage early sign-ups.

  • Celebrate milestones – recognise achievements such as exam passes, recital performances, or years at the studio.

  • Recognition programs – create ways for students and families to feel seen and appreciated.

Enrollment:

Encouraging new enrollments begins with understanding your data from Section 1 and focusing on peak periods. Strategies to boost enrollment include:

  • Timing your marketing – align campaigns with your studio’s busiest enrollment months (e.g., January, March, September).

  • Highlight popular classes – push classes, age groups, or dance styles that attract the most students.

  • Trial classes – offer new families a chance to try before committing.

  • Referral schemes – incentivise existing students to bring friends with rewards or perks.

Section 5: Your Calendar

Nothing has to be set in stone, but as you head into 2026, you now have your finances reviewed, your main goal in place, and your SMART goals to guide you. The next step is to map out a rough calendar for the year, so you can see the big picture and plan your actions around key dates.

Start by marking high points in your studio year:

  • Recitals, showcases, or exams

  • Open days or trial class periods

  • Competitions or workshops

  • High enrollment periods

Then, think about how your marketing, partnerships, and special initiatives can support these events. Even a rough plan helps you stay organised, anticipate busy periods, and make the most of your studio’s opportunities.
